What benefits am I entitled to when a contract ends?

In Costa Rica, the severance benefits you receive when an employment relationship ends depend on the type of termination. The table below summarizes when each applies:

Notice (art. 28 CT)

  • Under 3 months: no notice
  • 3 to 6 months: 1 week
  • 6 months to 1 year: 15 days
  • More than 1 year: 1 month

Severance (art. 29 CT)

Capped at 8 years. Days per year range from 19.5 days in the first year to 21.24 days from year five. If you worked more than 8 years, the cap is still 8 years of computation.
